RUTA LEE |
|

 |
RUTA LEE is one of Hollywood's most glamorous ladies,
multifaceted and a top-notch civic contributor. Miss Lee's class,
and her acting versatility,
has earned her the respect of Hollywood colleagues, plus the affection of audiences
from her countless appearances on television, in Films, and on the
theater stage.
|
|
Miss Lee was born Ruta Mary Kilmonis on May 30, 1936 in
Montreal, Canada. She was an only child, born to Lithuanian
immigrants. At the age of twelve, young Ruta moved with her parents
to Los Angeles where she would soon enter Hollywood high school and begin to
work towards what would become her 60 year acting career. The
Canadian teenager was smitten with "all things Hollywood" and
made up her mind to become a Hollywood Star.
While at Hollywood High, Ruta's career in show business got
its start at Hollywood's famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre… as an
usherette. the hard working teenager then became the candy girl. She
was quickly promoted to box office cashier and then, just as
quickly, was fired. She vowed to return to that famous courtyard -
The center of Hollywood Fame!

Over 50 years later, Ruta would, in fact,
return to the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre. It was in
2006, when she attended a ceremony in her honor.
It is amazing (& most ironic - perhaps serendipitous?),
that after more than 50 years, not only is this Beautiful, historic
Hollywood landmark meticulously preserved,
she's
still standing at the original location, proudly representing all
that was "HOLLYWOOD".
- the subtle grandeur, the sophisticated glamour, the classy
style, unchanged by time and monetary pressures...
OK! You got me...
These two Hollywood Legends united
for posterity when Hollywood placed Ruta's Hollywood star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame - directly in front of the Chinese Theater's box office.
"It's
the pot at the end of the rainbow," Ruta said as she was joined by her
family and friends, including Debbie Reynolds and Alex
Trebek, who co-hosted the mid-1970s game show "High
Rollers" with Miss Lee.
|
When
the young Ruta realized that acting skills were
necessary to supplement her natural,
radiant beauty & talent, she enrolled in acting classes at Hollywood High
School,
intensely studied acting, and was soon attracting attention from her
appearances in high school plays. The tenacious teenager signed with an agent, and by her High
School Graduation she was auditioning for multiple acting roles.
After an uncredited appearance on cowboy star Roy Rogers' TV show,
she won a small part on TV's The Adventures of Superman. Her agent
felt that the name "Ruta Kilmonis" was too ethnic, which limited her
selection of roles. Ruta was proud of her Lithuanian heritage but
relented to changing "Ruta" to "Rita" for the episode's credits. At
the same time, she had won her first film role as the youngest bride
in the MGM Musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), and was again was billed as
"Rita". When she failed to even be credited in The Girl in the
Red Velvet Swing (1955), Ruta accepted the inevitable - She retained
her given Lithuanian name, and "Hollywood Star - Miss Ruta Lee"
had arrived.
|
When
'Seven Brides' was nominated for five Academy Awards (including
'Best Picture'), and won the Oscar for 'Best Music Score',
Hollywood, did indeed, acknowledge the talented 18 year old dancer's
arrival.After
Seven Brides, Ruta would appear in several other films, including: Anything Goes
(1956), Funny Face (with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn -1957), and
Marjorie Morningstar (1958
- with
Natalie Wood). In 1962 she appeared as Frank Sinatra's girlfriend in the
"Rat Pack" Hit comedy/western, Sergeants 3, alongside Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr.
and Peter Lawford. |
|
Despite her early film success, it was
in television where Ruta truly established herself as a
household name. During the period of the above named films, Ruta
appeared in over 50 episodes of the majority of television's biggest
series, including:
The Twilight Zone {pictured}
Dragnet, Highway Patrol, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The
Millionaire, the Fugitive, Perry Mason, Peter Gunn, and Hawaiian
Eye, to name but a few. |

It was during this period when the

TV, and all the networks' prime time featured them nightly. These
included shows which are now Considered to be TV's finest & most
successful Series --

What do All these Classic Westerns have in
common?
That's right! -
MISS RUTA LEE!
Not only did Ruta appear on All
Twenty of the top Western series, on most of the
shows, she made multiple appearances.
In many instances, Lee's unique role
portrayal was so dynamic and well received, that fans requested her
return, and writers scrambled to include her character in additional
episodes. When that wasn't the case, producers & directors wanted
her to return due to her professional work ethic and classy demeanor
while on the set.
The same was true for most of her television appearances. She
certainly wasn't limited to western roles. Her multiple talents
allowed her to do musicals, Variety shows, comedies, and, of course,
dramas. plus, Ruta Lee has a cult following of fans devoted to her
work in horror roles.

Over the decades Ruta has appeared on just about every type of
television program, and it's usually the top series in each genre.
"Cop" shows - In addition to the five classics listed above, include:
"Burke's Law", "Chips", "Richard Diamond, Private Detective", "San
Francisco Beat", "Rescue 8", "Ironside", "Mannix", "The Mod Squad",
"Simon & Simon", "Jake and the Fatman", "77 Sunset Strip", and even
"Mayberry R.F.D."
COMEDIES? How about:
"Mork & Mindy", "December Bride", "I Love Lucy", "Andy Griffith",
"Hogan's Heroes", "Delta", "Charles in Charge", "Roseanne", "The
Flying Nun", "Three's Company", "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.", and "The
Flintstone Comedy Show" - the role of Hidea
Frankenstone.
* In 2006, she guest starred on ABC's "Life with Bonnie" in a role
especially written for her by series star & creator, Bonnie Hunt.
Memorable Episodes:
Often Miss Lee's comedic roles were in
"unforgettable" episodes of the classic series. For
example:
ROSEANNE - In the 90s, Ruta appeared in two episodes of
the controversial comedy as the girlfriend of Roseanne's mother,
played by veteran actress Estelle Parsons, when Grandma / Mom
discloses to the family that she is gay.
THE LUCY SHOW - Ruta guest starred along with Milton Berle,
with both actors playing themselves. The episode begins with Lucy
hired as a temporary (weekend) secretary to Milton Berle. When
Berle's doorbell rings, Lucy opens the door and is shocked when she
sees the famous actress, Ruta Lee, and slams the door in Ruta's
face. Lucy soon suspects that old "Uncle Miltie" is having an
affair with the glamorous Miss Ruta Lee, setting up the episode's
most memorable scene. Repulsed by the thought of this lecherous act,
Lucy is determined to undermine the seduction and, at dinner, Milton
Berle gets a salad dumped on his head.
Miss Ruta Lee's Television career
includes more than 2000 appearances on
a variety of all types of TV shows
*AUTHOR'S NOTE:
When I first read the
above, despite her lengthy
FILMOGRAPHY, {click},
ranging from Perry Mason to
Power Rangers, I still assumed the author had mistakenly included an
extra "0" and corrected it to read two hundred; still an amazing
number for an actress who had never starred in a long running TV
series. Then I considered her extensive voice-over work (Disney,
Smurfs, Flintstones, etc.), and finally, I realized that I was the
one who was mistaken, when I recognized her participation on Game
Shows alone exceeded 200 appearances.

Game Shows
During the early 70s, frustrated by
the lack of quality role offers, Ruta began to accept offers for
game show appearances.
They were all the rage during this period,
And miss Lee began appearing regularly on game shows
such as What's My Line?, Hollywood Squares, and Match Game. Ruta
enjoyed the work and felt it offered an opportunity for fans to get
to know her in a more personal role. Her personality and charm made
her a game show favorite, and she welcomed the offer to join Alex
Trebek as a co-host on NBC's Newest Game Show, High Rollers.
The daily noontime show first aired on July 1,1974, with Ruta
doubling as the "model/Dice Girl". The popular daily show ran for 2
full years, ending - June 11,1976. |
Four months prior to the conclusion of High Rollers, the
beautiful game show hostess, and Hollywood icon, married a handsome Texas restaurant executive,
Webster B. Lowe,
on Valentines Day, 1976.
*AUTHOR'S NOTE:
"Webb", as he is known to friends and rental
property tenants, was the owner of a popular Sothern California fast
food chain, All American Burger, which he was attempting to
franchise nationally, and beyond, around that time. A hard working,
gregarious man, he was unsuccessful in his efforts to duplicate
"McDonalds" success, but he has been quite successful at his
matrimonial efforts. After more than 33 years of marriage, The happy
couple, now in their 70s, remain as busy as ever, and divide their
time between their homes in Hollywood, Palm Springs, Fort Worth, and
Puerto Las Hadas - Manzanillo, Mexico. |
|
A webpage on Ruta wouldn't be complete
without a mention of what is both a heart-warming story, and an
unbelievable example of Miss Ruta Lee's tenacity. |
Back in 1964, the 27 yr. old actress, with less than a decade in the
film business, already known as a defender of human rights, felt it
was time to apply her celebrity to a personal cause. Ruta Lee called
then Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev asking him to pardon her
grandmother, Ludvise Kamandulis, who had been imprisoned in a Siberian internment camp since World
War II.Not only was The pardon granted, Miss Lee's grandmother
was allowed to leave the USSR, to live out her years with Ruta in sunny California,
at Ruta's gorgeous
LAUREL CANYON Estate.

Now into her 70s, Miss Lee, like Clint Eastwood, with whom she
shares a birthday (she's 6 yrs. younger), shows no signs of
retiring. She truly loves to entertain and now is able to enjoy her
first love, The Theater.
She'll still do the occasional TV movie
if she embraces her role, like the recent "A Christmas Too Many" in
which she stars with another film legend, Mickey Rooney.
But, like her longtime closest
friend, Debbie Reynolds, it's the intimacy of a live
performance that Ruta truly enjoys. Recently, Miss Lee completed a critically acclaimed performance in
Steel Magnolias at Garry Marshall's Falcon Theater and In February 2008, Lee appeared as
"Clairee" in a production of
Steel
Magnolias with Sally Struthers at the Casa Mañana Theatre in Fort
Worth, Texas. {Fan Convention-2002}

In addition to her career in the
entertainment business, Ruta Lee has devoted more than 50 years to
her other endeavor,
The Thalians.

The Thalians |

Ruta
Lee has been involved with the charitable organization
The Thalians
for over fifty years.
This Dynamic Lady is the long time chair of The Thalians' fundraisers devoted
to raising money for mental health.

Back in 1955, Ruta and her close friend, Debbi Reynolds, joined
with a group of other well known young actors determined to do
something for society bigger than themselves. Their mission was to
achieve better mental health for the community. as well as the world
at large.
They had their first meeting at Jayne Mansfield's Pink Palace in
Beverly Hills, on Mother's Day, May 1955. They decided to devote
their energy and money to children with mental health problems. They
called themselves
"The Thalians,"
after the
Goddess of Comedy, Thalia.
The Thalians Mental Health Clinic resulted and In order to raise the
funds for the clinic, this all volunteer organization started a
yearly gala celebration attended by an all star group and other
staunch supporters. |
|
In addition to raising money for troubled youth and mental health
organizations, Miss Lee, who is also a board chairperson, has co-produced the annual
Gala Ball of the Thalians with
Debbie Reynolds for over fifty years.
